Classes and Workshops

Make Kate’s Open Quilt Studio your new quilting, sewing and embroidery home to learn new techniques, to push past the traditional to try new things that increase your skills. Whether you’re working on your first pieced quilt top, pillowcase, or a challenging piece of textile art to hang on your wall, we are happy to help. Every student and every project is important to us. We offer dynamic bilingual classes for beginners and advanced quilters alike. We can’t wait to share our passion with you!

What you need to bring for Nearly Every Class

Your sewing machine in good working order with the instruction manual and a sewing kit. Sewing kits consist of the following items - needles, thread, seam ripper, scissors, straight pins, pencil/pen and paper (or notebook), quilting ruler, rotary cutter and cutting mat and an extra bobbin. You are welcome to borrow a Bernina or Baby Lock for the day. Just call ahead to verify which machines are available.

Please arrive between 10 - 15 minutes before class so we may begin on time

Class Registration Policy:

  • Register in person, by phone at 506-532-6456 or online at https://www.openquiltstudio.com/classes.htm

  • Payment must be made to guarantee your space in class

  • Class registration fees are non-refundable, unless we have an insufficient number of people to fill the class or if there is someone else to fill your spot. 

  • Books or patterns bought for class are non-refundable and non-returnable regardless of class cancellations. 

  • You are responsible to ensure that you get a supply list at least one week prior to class. 

  • Please respect those with allergies and refrain from wearing perfumes, scented lotions and hair sprays.

  • Be aware that some classes require pre-class preparations and homework.

  • Basic supplies will not be provided if you forget to bring your own to class. Kate’s Open Quilt Studio requires that you bring your own sewing supplies, rotary cutter, rulers and cutting mats.

  • You are required to bring your own sewing machine, and your machine must be in good working order before classes start.

DIY Sneaker Class - In Person Only

Don't you just love the Hunter's Star Quilt? But look at all those strips and diamonds and triangles. Are those HSTs? Does it have those dreaded Y Seams? Well not this time. We will be using the Stripology Ruler System to "Stripologize" the Confetti Star (Hunter's Star) pattern by Material Girls. Even more fun will be had when we play around with all 7 layouts that come with the pattern. Join Ann Mitton as she walks you through how to use this easy pattern to create a 2 colour or a totally Scrappy Hunter's Star with cutting made easy with the Stripology Ruler.

What better time to make some Freestanding Lace Flowers and invite a few butterflies to adorn your home? We are all tired of the snow, the cold, the dark days of winter so let's join Ann Mitton as she guides you through making some beautiful Freestanding Lace spring flowers and butterflies. This class uses 2 machine embroidery designs from OESD to create some lovely posies and gorgeous butterflies.

This 10 week course will challenge you to look at patterns that demand various rulers and learn to pick which rulers you actually need for a project and how to use your basic rulers to complete it. Technique Sampler will also challenge you to develop your quilting and piercing skills while giving you the techniques to master complex and challenging quilts. This class is an intermediate level class. You must have experience in machine piecing, and you must have more than one quilt under your belt. We will be exploring different construction methods and techniques to create a sampler quilt that helps you build your toolkit of skills. We will be covering the entire quilt over 10 weeks. With 2 quilt sizes to choose from, Ann Mitton will guide you as you create this interesting skill builder quilt.

Free motion quilting not for you? Let Kate's Open Quilt Studio and Ann Mitton be your guide as you work your way towards quilting your own quilts on your domestic sewing machine. Learn the basics of straight-line quilting on up to intricate marked designs as you master machine quilting with your walking foot or dual feed function. We will investigate quilting techniques such as Matchstick Quilting, Crosshatch and Grid Quilting, Quilting with Decorative Stitches, Quilting Curves and Spirals, Wavy Lines, Quilting Text, and so much more. Join us for this new look at quilting on your domestic machine.

Make an embroidered Tote in one of 3 different sizes. All the exterior pieces are done on the embroidery machine and then the bag is assembled on your sewing machine. Lined and with a zipper closure, we will be adding a bonus section on how to create interior pockets. If made in the largest 6 by 10 hoop size, this bag is a very generous 24" x 12" x 4" but even in the smallest hoop size it is a roomy 16" x 8" x 4" hold all. Solid fabrics and colorful thread choices will allow the graceful and artistic embroidery designs to shine and give you a unique bag that will be noticed and admired. Come join Ann Mitton for this 2 day bag making session and create a Tote Bag that you will use over and over again.

Canada Post Shipping - Due to the Strike we are holding all our shipments until they have been resolved. If you would like to arrange alternative shipping options or pricing for Shipping, please reach out to us. 80% of Small Businesses rely on Canada Post for reasonable shipping rates. Looking at other shipping companies for rates has reminded us that the cost to ship with anyone other than Canada Post would quadruple to price for shipping; something a small business cannot easily cover. 

How much does shipping cost?

All domestic packages are eligible for free shipping with a minimum purchase of $250.00 before applicable taxes.
  

Economy: $19.99* for Canada Post Flat Rate Box Small 10" x 14" x 2". Holds a maximum of 5 meters of fabric or equivalent in patterns, books or thread. Package is only insured for up to $100.00 and the Studio is only responsible for the insured amount in the event a package does not arrive. 

All Flat Rate Standard packages are fully insured and tracked. Shipping costs for orders under our $250.00 minmum are based on region and found below.

Do you ship to international locations?
Yes we do ship to the United States and the cost is $32.99 CDN.

We are happy to get a quote and arrange shipping to other countries. Please contact us directly to arrange this.

How are orders packaged for shipping?
We will package your order in the most suitable way to secure the best shipping price and expediency of delivery. This means that when you order a fabric bundle, it will not necessarily arrive looking as it did on the shop website. For example, a fat quarter bundle that is folded and tied with a ribbon, stacked as a bundle, might be dismantled to make your package flatter to in order to keep shipping costs down as the larger the width of the package, the higher the shipping cost.

What are my options for receiving my order?
  • Choose In-store pickup and visit the store Tuesday-Saturday between 9:30am and 4:30pm
  • Ship by Canada Post Expedited Tracking Service. Fees may apply. 
  • Email or phone us to request courier service for an additional fee.

Refund Policy


What is your refund/return policy for online orders?
The customer will be responsible for the cost of shipping any returned goods as well as the cost of shipping replacement orders. If orders are damaged through shipping, please photograph the items and send the photo and an explanation to our email address. We will file a claim with the shipper and send out a replacement order as soon as possible. Do not return the damaged good unless you are requested to do so.

Can I return fabric?
There are no refunds or exchanges of cut fabrics. There are no refunds or exchanges on custom kits. If you discover a damaged piece of fabric, please bring it back to the store for us to look at or send a close-up photograph to our email address.

Can I return notions, patterns or books?
Any notions in their original packing, unopened can be returned within 14 days of purchase with the original receipt and the credited amount will be issued to a gift certificate with no expiry date.

Defective products are exchange only and Kate's Open Quilt Studio. will determine if the product was defective at the time or sale.

Due to copyright issues, there will be no refund or exchange on patterns and books.


May I return an item purchases on sale?
All purchase of sale items are FINAL.

What if online inventory is inaccurate and you are unable to fulfill by order as intended?
We are human and computers are not, but errors happen there too! Sometimes, there could be an inaccuracy in our inventory levels and we might oversell an item. In that case, we will phone or email you to offer a substitution or the opportunity to wait until the item is restocked. 

If we are unable to fulfill the ordered item, a gift certificate will be issued to you for the cost of that product or the insufficient yardage. There are no expiry dates on gift certificates.

Cancellation of Classes/Retreat?
Classes and retreats will be cancelled if the minimum number of 4 required participants has not been reached two weeks prior to the class. In this this case, a refund will be issued to you within 14 days or you may apply the credit amount to a different class.

Should our local Covid Restrictions change and we are unable to run an in-person event, we will move to online classes and learning.

Should you decide to cancel your registration for an event, class or retreat, you will receive a full credit to a gift card as long as the cancellation is not made within 2 weeks prior to the class date. After that time, you will forfeit your full registration fee. 

If you are unable to attend, you do have the option of finding your own replacement participant but Kate's Open Quilt Studio will not assist with this or give any fee credit to the original participant. You would be required to email us the name and contact information of your replacement.

If Kate's Open Quilt Studiohas to cancel an event that you have paid for, you will receive a full refund.
