Classes and Workshops

Make Kate’s Open Quilt Studio your new quilting, sewing and embroidery home to learn new techniques, to push past the traditional to try new things that increase your skills. Whether you’re working on your first pieced quilt top, pillowcase, or a challenging piece of textile art to hang on your wall, we are happy to help. Every student and every project is important to us. We offer dynamic bilingual classes for beginners and advanced quilters alike. We can’t wait to share our passion with you!

What you need to bring for Nearly Every Class

Your sewing machine in good working order with the instruction manual and a sewing kit. Sewing kits consist of the following items - needles, thread, seam ripper, scissors, straight pins, pencil/pen and paper (or notebook), quilting ruler, rotary cutter and cutting mat and an extra bobbin. You are welcome to borrow a Bernina or Baby Lock for the day. Just call ahead to verify which machines are available.

Please arrive between 10 - 15 minutes before class so we may begin on time

Class Registration Policy:

  • Register in person, by phone at 506-532-6456 or online at https://www.openquiltstudio.com/classes.htm

  • Payment must be made to guarantee your space in class

  • Class registration fees are non-refundable, unless we have an insufficient number of people to fill the class or if there is someone else to fill your spot. 

  • Books or patterns bought for class are non-refundable and non-returnable regardless of class cancellations. 

  • You are responsible to ensure that you get a supply list at least one week prior to class. 

  • Please respect those with allergies and refrain from wearing perfumes, scented lotions and hair sprays.

  • Be aware that some classes require pre-class preparations and homework.

  • Basic supplies will not be provided if you forget to bring your own to class. Kate’s Open Quilt Studio requires that you bring your own sewing supplies, rotary cutter, rulers and cutting mats.

  • You are required to bring your own sewing machine, and your machine must be in good working order before classes start.

Floral Felicity QAL

This lovely Floral Felicity Quilt from the amazing sisters of Sew Kind of Wonderful features modern, stylized shapes, large elements/ blocks and uses the SKW Wonder Curve Ruler. Complexity is conquered by breaking the project down into zones, organizing fabrics with ease and a structured cutting plan. We will zero in on one part of the quilt to create a smaller 40" by 60" quilt however you will learn all the skills you will need to carry on and create the entire quilt that is a generous 80" by 101". Using 13 focus fabrics you can make this quilt using bundles, yardage, stash or scraps. The sky's the limit for possibilities. Come join Ann Mitton as she teaches you how to create this unique quilt with more ease than you would expect.

You will master modern cutting and piecing techniques using clear, detailed instructions together with hands-on guidance. We offer a modern way of thinking about quilting, with guides on threads, fabric types, batting, quilting methods and how to use the internet to further your learning. Educator: Ann Mitton

Online Only - Classes recorded and sent out.At one time part of every girl’s education included the creation of an embroidery sampler. Today we choose to be makers and creatives and this sampler will teach the basic embroidery stitches as well as intricate ones as our simple circles become fantastical flowers and creatures. The sampler was created by Sue Spargo during the covid epidemic as a way to give back to her students and those wishing to learn a new skill. You will require the pattern “Toned Down Circle Sampler” and Sue Spargo’s companion book: “Creative Stitching Second Edition”. Online Only - Classes recorded and sent out to students.

Perfect for confident beginners and intermediate quilters looking to improve sewing/quilting skillset. Learn new techniques, color theory, and receive a master class on scrap quilting with this great class! Inspired by one of Ken Kingswells trips to Japan, her inspiration is drawn from the many tea houses where she enjoyed green tea and a sweet red bean dessert. Pattern originally created for hand sewing, we have modified this pattern to be mostly machine piecing and paper piecing. Educator: Nancy Elaschuk

Machine Magic: Master Creativity

Laura Heine is an amazing colorist and pattern designer. These patterns are a collage technique using Steam-a-Seam 2. This workshop will explore Laura?s technique and several other styles of collage. As it is a technique workshop, you may choose any of Laura?s patterns to work on that day. She has some amazing minis as well which you may wish to use as a learning sample.

How much does shipping cost?
All packages shipped within Atlantic Canada are eligible for free shipping with a minimum purchase of $250.00 before applicable taxes. All packages shipped beyond Atlantic Canada are eligible for free shipping with a minimum purchase of $300.00 before applicable taxes. 
Economy: $21.99* for Canada Post Flat Rate Box Small 10" x 14" x 2". Holds a maximum of 5 meters of fabric or equivalent in patterns, books or thread. Package is only insured for up to $100.00 and the Studio is only responsible for the insured amount in the event a package does not arrive. All Flat Rate Standard packages are fully insured and tracked. Shipping costs for orders under our $250.00 minimum are based on region and found below.

Do you ship to international locations?
Yes we do ship to the United States and the cost is $32.99 CDN.
We are happy to get a quote and arrange shipping to other countries. Please contact us directly to arrange this.
How are orders packaged for shipping?
We will package your order in the most suitable way to secure the best shipping price and expediency of delivery. This means that when you order a fabric bundle, it will not necessarily arrive looking as it did on the shop website. For example, a fat quarter bundle that is folded and tied with a ribbon, stacked as a bundle, might be dismantled to make your package flatter to in order to keep shipping costs down as the larger the width of the package, the higher the shipping cost.
What are my options for receiving my order?
  • Choose In-store pickup and visit the store Tuesday-Saturday between 9:30am and 4:30pm
  • Ship by Canada Post Expedited Tracking Service. Fees may apply. 
  • Email or phone us to request courier service for an additional fee.

Refund Policy


What is your refund/return policy for online orders?
The customer will be responsible for the cost of shipping any returned goods as well as the cost of shipping replacement orders. If orders are damaged through shipping, please photograph the items and send the photo and an explanation to our email address. We will file a claim with the shipper and send out a replacement order as soon as possible. Do not return the damaged good unless you are requested to do so.
Can I return fabric?
There are no refunds or exchanges of cut fabrics. There are no refunds or exchanges on custom kits. If you discover a damaged piece of fabric, please bring it back to the store for us to look at or send a close-up photograph to our email address.
Can I return notions, patterns or books?
Any notions in their original packing, unopened can be returned within 14 days of purchase with the original receipt and the credited amount will be issued to a gift certificate with no expiry date.
Defective products are exchange only and Kate's Open Quilt Studio. will determine if the product was defective at the time or sale.
Due to copyright issues, there will be no refund or exchange on patterns and books.
May I return an item purchases on sale?
All purchase of sale items are FINAL.
What if online inventory is inaccurate and you are unable to fulfill by order as intended?
We are human and computers are not, but errors happen there too! Sometimes, there could be an inaccuracy in our inventory levels and we might oversell an item. In that case, we will phone or email you to offer a substitution or the opportunity to wait until the item is restocked. If we are unable to fulfill the ordered item, a gift certificate will be issued to you for the cost of that product or the insufficient yardage. There are no expiry dates on gift certificates.
Cancellation of Classes/Retreat?
Classes and retreats will be cancelled if the minimum number of 4 required participants has not been reached two weeks prior to the class. In this this case, a refund will be issued to you within 14 days or you may apply the credit amount to a different class.
Should you decide to cancel your registration for an event, class or retreat, you will receive a full credit to a gift card as long as the cancellation is not made within 2 weeks prior to the class date. After that time, you will forfeit your full registration fee. 
If you are unable to attend, you do have the option of finding your own replacement participant but Kate's Open Quilt Studio will not assist with this or give any fee credit to the original participant. You would be required to email us the name and contact information of your replacement.
If Kate's Open Quilt Studiohas to cancel an event that you have paid for, you will receive a full refund.
