Classes and Workshops

Make Kate’s Open Quilt Studio your new quilting, sewing and embroidery home to learn new techniques, to push past the traditional to try new things that increase your skills. Whether you’re working on your first pieced quilt top, pillowcase, or a challenging piece of textile art to hang on your wall, we are happy to help. Every student and every project is important to us. We offer dynamic bilingual classes for beginners and advanced quilters alike. We can’t wait to share our passion with you!

What you need to bring for Nearly Every Class

Your sewing machine in good working order with the instruction manual and a sewing kit. Sewing kits consist of the following items - needles, thread, seam ripper, scissors, straight pins, pencil/pen and paper (or notebook), quilting ruler, rotary cutter and cutting mat and an extra bobbin. You are welcome to borrow a Bernina or Baby Lock for the day. Just call ahead to verify which machines are available.

Please arrive between 10 - 15 minutes before class so we may begin on time

Class Registration Policy:

  • Register in person, by phone at 506-532-6456 or online at https://www.openquiltstudio.com/classes.htm

  • Payment must be made to guarantee your space in class

  • Class registration fees are non-refundable, unless we have an insufficient number of people to fill the class or if there is someone else to fill your spot. 

  • Books or patterns bought for class are non-refundable and non-returnable regardless of class cancellations. 

  • You are responsible to ensure that you get a supply list at least one week prior to class. 

  • Please respect those with allergies and refrain from wearing perfumes, scented lotions and hair sprays.

  • Be aware that some classes require pre-class preparations and homework.

  • Basic supplies will not be provided if you forget to bring your own to class. Kate’s Open Quilt Studio requires that you bring your own sewing supplies, rotary cutter, rulers and cutting mats.

  • You are required to bring your own sewing machine, and your machine must be in good working order before classes start.

This 10 week course will give you a solid foundation to begin creating amazing quilts for your home and for your family and friends. You will master modern cutting and piecing techniques using clear, detailed instructions together with hands-on guidance. We offer a modern way of thinking about quilting, with guides on threads, fabric types, batting, quilting methods and how to use the internet to further your learning. Intimidated by your embroidery machine? Confused as to what threads to use? Does choosing a stabilizer sound like you need a degree in fiber arts? What about needles? And, what the heck is multiple hooping? This 6 week introduction to machine embroidery will teach you the techniques needed, lingo required, and give you the confidence to tackle every project like a pro! Step into the world of intermediate paper piercing while creating a stunning quilt with the support and guidance of a master paper piecing expert. Take advantage of everything your sewing machine has to offer! Join us as we use decorative quilt artist Deborah Louie fantastic book: Machine Magic, on how to use the stitch options on your machine and incorporate them into gorgeous appliqu? pieces. Join us as we build and add decorative stitches to individual flowers using different thread weights, unique colors before applying them to the background with free-motion decorative stitching. Learn how to combine stitches and adjust stitch widths and lengths to create your unique stitch garden. Learn all about Quilt Labels in this 3 hours lecture style class. Why they are important, how to think about the different types of labels, what information to add, supplies needed and the different methods to attach labels to your quilts. Saturday, October 7th 1-3pm

Do you love to sit and hand stitch? Have you seen quilts made with lovely little hexagons and wondered? How do they do that?? Let us show you how. Ann Mitton will show you several different methods of doing EPP covering such things as Fussy Cutting, Templates and we will look at a few different ways to stitch your Hexis together. EPP is a return to the way we used to sew. Using templates, custom papers, a design and pretty fabrics, EPP is the new next thing in quilting. Wednesday, Oct. 18th & Thursday, Oct. 19th: 10 - 4 pm

Embroidery on card stock is one of the coolest ways you can use your machine and share your passion with others. Make creating a double Wedding Ring Quilt easy with the Sew Kind of Wonderful Method! Don't be intimidated by this traditional quilt. You will learn to cut and piece curves with ease. Who knew you could sew a curve in a straight line? Certified Sew Kind of Wonderful Educator: Ann Mitton

Whether you are a beginner or wish to sharpen your domestic sewing machine quilting skills this class will cover topics such as supplies for quilting, marking options and designing fillers for your machine quilting as well as hands on machine quilting. This class is specifically dealing with fillers. You must have a machine which will drop its feed dogs. Educator: Nancy Elaschuk Friday, Nov. 10th 10 - 4pm

When I was first introduced to ruler work, I thought a new world in machine quilting had opened before me. I was right. Gone were the wavy lines as I stitched in the ditch on my quilts. No longer did I need to draw every quilting line. The ruler quilting world has exploded with rulers for every design quilters could need or imagine. I personally combine ruler work with free motion. Originally designed for long armers, rulers now are available for the domestic machine. A ruler foot is required for your machine and you must have experience in free motion quilting.

All over the internet you can see unique designs and tons of uses for this interesting construction method. Clothesline rope, a sewing machine and some ingenuity and you will have some useful but decorative vessels to use every day in your home or give as gifts. From coasters and placemats to full size fruit bowls and casserole carriers the sky's the limit once you learn the technique. Come join Ann Mitton as she shares the basics and some of the more complex aspects of sewing with rope to create lovely things. Friday, Sept. 29: 10 - 4pm or Friday, Nov. 3rd: 10 - 4pm

Free motion quilting not for you? Let Kate's Open Quilt Studio and Ann Mitton be your guide as you work your way towards quilting your own quilts on your domestic sewing machine. Learn the basics of straight-line quilting on up to intricate marked designs as you master machine quilting with your walking foot or dual feed function. We will investigate quilting techniques such as Matchstick Quilting, Crosshatch and Grid Quilting, Quilting with Decorative Stitches, Quilting Curves and Spirals, Wavy Lines, Quilting Text, and so much more. Patterns by Annie. As a quilter or sewist, you have a lot of sewing gidgets, gadgets, tools and STUFF. And now you have a class to go to and packing all this STUFF is going to be a challenge. Why not join this class with Ann Mitton and make this wonderful little tote that holds more STUFF than you could ever imagine. By Annie patterns are the benchmark for bag makers and this project is no exception. Well thought out, intuitive to your needs, transformative in design, you will love learning all the ins and outs of a more complicated bag made easy by Annie. Option to have bag machine quilted on the longarm. Must be delivered to the Studio 2 weeks before the class. Make quilting your own quilts achievable with Pauline Rogers two different techniques - Between Blocks and Back to Back. Working with small sections at a time, these techniques eliminate all the bulk and make it possible to quilt a quilt of any size! Friday, Oct. 6th: 10 - 4pm

If you have enjoyed any of our Sew Kind of Wonderful Quick Curve Classes you will surely be excited learn how to use this new innovation from the SKW girls. If you have never experienced an SKW project, why not take this opportunity to give it a try? Come join our SKW Certified Instructor, Ann Mitton as she shows you the ins and outs of the new Quick Straight Ruler from SKW. Double Starburst is a modern version of a classic Mariner's Compass block. Coming in at 82" by 82", your colour choices coupled with the pattern's unique piecing techniques will make this quilt a real standout in your home or as a gift. Ann will take you through the project, giving you tips and tricks while helping you to cut all the angles correctly and stitch all the pieces in order. This class will address the DREADED SCRAP COLLECTION. We will have a frank discussion about things like how to manage IT but more importantly how to use IT. If you are sick of scraps clogging your workspace, filling bags, baskets, bins, bottles, and whatever other vessels you might have in your sewing space, then its time to seek help. Maybe you just need to go to the clinic for a checkup or maybe you need a serious intervention or maybe you are somewhere in between the extremes. If so, this class is for you Tuesday, Nov. 28th: 10 - 4pm

Have you always wanted to make a By Annie bag but felt intimidated at the prospect? Come join Ann as she guides you through the process of creating this spacious and versatile By Annie bag. This pattern is an improved version of the original design first introduced in 2016. New and improved instructions that include 3 spacious sizes make this project a fun start to making By Annie patterns. This bag has a triangular profile with a flat bottom and features an easy to open zipper top. These bags are fun to use in so many ways. Use them to organize your cosmetics at home or for travel. Or use them to help organize your sewing items for classes or retreats. Put your travel iron in the large bag and all your notions and threads in the other 2 sizes. The possibilities are endless. Learn to create a complex, multi-threaded tiling scene for the Winter Season that will inspire and impress in this 3 day class. The latest OESD Christmas Tiling Scene (TBA) is a great introduction to tiling scenes, with numerous skills and techniques used to create the rich scenery. This class is available for online and in person learning. Limit of 10 people in class, 5 max in person. Thread kits & Fabric kits will be available closer to class date Wednesday, Nov. 8th & Thursday, Nov. 9th: 10 - 4pm each day & Wednesday, Dec. 6th 10 - 1pm (to discuss sewing tiling scenes together)

Join us from 10 - 4 for a Sew Day at the Studio. Work on your own projects or join us while we work on a Charity Quilt and volunteer your skills and time. Limit of 5 people in Studio for a sew day so book early before our seats run out!

For all BERNINA Owners. Learn more about your BERNINA and master new skills. Try out different feet, different features, and complete mini projects while spending the afternoon with other BERNINA owners. Focus on Improv Quilting with Cindy Grisdela and mastering your Sewing/Piecing with your BERNINA/Bernette. Only Online Seating Available.

All domestic orders receive free shipping with a minimum purchase of $300.00 before applicable taxes. All Packages are shipped via 
Canada Post Expedited, with insurance and Tracking.

Yes we do ship to the United States and the cost is $32.99 CDN.

We are happy to get a quote and arrange shipping to other countries. Please contact us directly to arrange this.

How are orders packaged for shipping?
We will package your order in the most suitable way to secure the best shipping price and expediency of delivery. This means that when you order a fabric bundle, it will not necessarily arrive looking as it did on the shop website. For example, a fat quarter bundle that is folded and tied with a ribbon, stacked as a bundle, might be dismantled to make your package flatter to in order to keep shipping costs down as the larger the width of the package, the higher the shipping cost.

What are my options for receiving my order?
  • Choose In-store pickup and visit the store Tuesday-Saturday between 9:30am and 4:30pm
  • Ship by Canada Post Expedited Tracking Service. Fees may apply. 
  • Email or phone us to request courier service for an additional fee.

Refund Policy


What is your refund/return policy for online orders?
The customer will be responsible for the cost of shipping any returned goods as well as the cost of shipping replacement orders. If orders are damaged through shipping, please photograph the items and send the photo and an explanation to our email address. We will file a claim with the shipper and send out a replacement order as soon as possible. Do not return the damaged good unless you are requested to do so.

Can I return fabric?
There are no refunds or exchanges of cut fabrics. There are no refunds or exchanges on custom kits. If you discover a damaged piece of fabric, please bring it back to the store for us to look at or send a close-up photograph to our email address.

Can I return notions, patterns or books?
Any notions in their original packing, unopened can be returned within 14 days of purchase with the original receipt and the credited amount will be issued to a gift certificate with no expiry date.

Defective products are exchange only and Kate's Open Quilt Studio. will determine if the product was defective at the time or sale.

Due to copyright issues, there will be no refund or exchange on patterns and books.


May I return an item purchases on sale?
All purchase of sale items are FINAL.

What if online inventory is inaccurate and you are unable to fulfill by order as intended?
We are human and computers are not, but errors happen there too! Sometimes, there could be an inaccuracy in our inventory levels and we might oversell an item. In that case, we will phone or email you to offer a substitution or the opportunity to wait until the item is restocked. 

If we are unable to fulfill the ordered item, a gift certificate will be issued to you for the cost of that product or the insufficient yardage. There are no expiry dates on gift certificates.

Cancellation of Classes/Retreat?
Classes and retreats will be cancelled if the minimum number of 4 required participants has not been reached two weeks prior to the class. In this this case, a refund will be issued to you within 14 days or you may apply the credit amount to a different class.

Should our local Covid Restrictions change and we are unable to run an in-person event, we will move to online classes and learning.

Should you decide to cancel your registration for an event, class or retreat, you will receive a full credit to a gift card as long as the cancellation is not made within 2 weeks prior to the class date. After that time, you will forfeit your full registration fee. 

If you are unable to attend, you do have the option of finding your own replacement participant but Kate's Open Quilt Studio will not assist with this or give any fee credit to the original participant. You would be required to email us the name and contact information of your replacement.

If Kate's Open Quilt Studiohas to cancel an event that you have paid for, you will receive a full refund.
